The upcoming election on Tuesday, November 6, will see both sitting senators facing three opponents.
Incumbent Roger Wicker is opposed by David Baria, Danny Bedwell and Shawn O’Hara.
Cindy Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the seat left vacant upon the retirement of Senator Thad Cochran, is vying for continued control of the position against Mike Espy, Tobey Bernard Bartee and Chris McDaniel.
Espy served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 through 1983, and as Secretary of Agriculture under President Bill Clinton. McDaniel ran an unsuccessful bid to unseat then incumbent Thad Cochran in 2014.
Also on the ballot is:
• U.S. House of Representatives, 1st District, incumbent Trent Kelly, being opposed by Randy Mack Wadkins and Tracella Lou O’Hara Hill.
• Court of Appeals, District 1, Position 2: Donna M. Barnes.
• Chancery Court, District 6, Place 1: Joseph Kilgore
• Chancery Court, District 6, Place 2: Kiley Kirk and Rosalind H. Jordan.
• Circuit Court, District 5, Place 1: Joseph ‘Joey’ Loper, Jr.
• Circuit court, District 5, Place 2: George M. Mitchell, Jr.
• School Board Member, District 3: Linda T. McDaniel.
• School Board Member, District 4: Ommie Rachel Ashford and Laura Gibbs.
•Election Commissioner: Juliette Ashford.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Presently, absentee voting is underway and individuals who have never registered to vote here must do so soon if they want to cast a ballot in the general election.
Absentee voting for the Nov. 6 general election began last week and continues through noon Nov. 3.
The circuit clerk’s office is always open two Saturdays before Election Day for absentee voting. Those dates are Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 from 8 a.m.-noon.
Eligible voters
You may vote by absentee ballot in Mississippi if you:
• will be away from your county on Election Day for any reason;
• are 65 years of age or older;
• are a student, teacher or administrator at a school whose studies or employment there necessitates your absence from your county on Election Day; or you are the spouse or dependent thereof;
• have a temporary or permanent physical disability that renders you unable to vote in person without substantial hardship;
• are the parent, spouse or dependent of a person with a temporary or permanent physical disability who is hospitalized outside of their county of residence or more than 50 miles away, and you (the parent, spouse or dependent) will be with that person on Election Day;
• will be unable to vote in person because you are required to be at work on Election Day during the times at which the polls will be open;
• are a member, spouse or dependent of the congressional delegation;
• are a disabled war veteran (or spouse or dependent of such a person) in a hospital;
• are a member (or spouse or dependent of such a person) of the Merchant Marine or American Red Cross.
