A blood drive will be held Wednesday, September 11 for the Madison County deputy, Brad Sullivan, shot in the head September 5 while trying to make an arrest.
Sullivan grew up in Nanih Waiya area of Winston County.
According to the Madison Police Department, the drive will be at the former Tulane Madison campus at the corner of Hwy 51 and Main Street from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The address is 2115 Main Street in Madison.
The Madison County Sheriff's Department deputy was shot in the head following a "hostage" situation and subsequent car chase early Thursday morning of September 6 in Madison County.
Sullivan remains in critical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he was expected to undergo several surgeries, according to hospital staff.
The deputy was honored in 2016 by the Mississippi Center for Police & Sheriffs for apprehending a violent habitual offender after the suspect shot several times at the deputy during a routine traffic stop.
Madison County District Attorney John Bramlett identified the alleged shooter as Edgar James Egbert of Canton.
Egbert is facing multiple charges including six counts of attempted murder of law enforcement officers, one count of kidnapping and one count of felony fleeing.
Sullivan was wounded around 7:15 a.m on September 6. After the suspect crashed his vehicle into a ditch, he exited and started shooting. Other law enforcement officers involved in the pursuit returned fire, hitting the suspect before taking him into custody.
Sullivan was airlifted to UMMC.
The chairman of the hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Alan Jones, said the deputy was awake and talking to doctors when he arrived, but has since been admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition.
“He will need some additional surgery,” Jones said.
Madison Sheriff Randy Tucker said his deputies had responded to a call about a domestic dispute that had escalated into a hostage situation when the suspect jumped in a vehicle and sped away.
Madison County District Attorney John Bramlett said the investigation has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Tucker issued the following statement about the shooting:
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department responded to a hostage/kidnap situation. After Deputies made contact with the suspect, a chase ensued on Highway 16.
Deputies, in an effort to keep the public safe, deployed stops sticks. The suspect’s vehicle left the roadway and came to a complete rest in a ditch at the intersection of Avondale Road and Highway 16. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect opened fire on the Deputies. Deputies sustained injuries due to gunfire and are in the hospital.
Deputies returned fire and the suspect is now in custody.
As protocol dictates, when officers are involved in a shooting, this case is being turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Since this is an ongoing investigation; we are not able to make any further comment.
The findings of MBI’s investigation will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office.
Egbert is charged with six counts attempted murder of law enforcement officers, one count of kidnapping and one count of felony fleeing.
Egberts preliminary hearing is set for Sep. 24.
