A group of 23 youth ranging in age from six years to twelve years, had the opportunity to learn about law enforcement and all types of emergency services, from professionals, when they attended the Third Annual Junior Deputy Academy, July 8-12. The Academy was sponsored by Winston County Sheriff’s Office, and held at South Louisville Baptist Church. Each day’s session lasted from 08:00 a.m. until 12 noon, with a graduation ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evening.
The Academy, which was the idea of Deputies Jimmy Lovorn and Mark Gregory, featured sessions dealing with gun safety, boating safety, first aid, bullying, seat belt safety, texting and driving and much more. Some highlights of the Academy were the opportunity to tour a medical helicopter on Wednesday, and ‘working’ a mock crime scene on Thursday.
The crime scene involved an accidental shooting in which there was an injury. Winston S.O. Investigator Connie Hampton led the Junior Deputies through the process of gathering evidence without contaminating the scene, interviewing victims, witnesses, neighbors and more until they were able to determine exactly what happened.
Lovorn stated that the Academy has grown each year, with a number of kids returning from previous years. An added bonus this year was having Stella Williamson on board to assist; Williamson was a participant during the first two years, but could not participate this year due to her age, so she opted to assist.
Lovorn added that seeing the yearly growth is a good thing, and it is a true learning opportunity for the children, as they have a chance to see a little of what law enforcement officers deal with on a regular basis.
He said, “We actually teach respect for adults and law enforcement officers.” Concerning their graduation, Lovorn said they begin with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, and then each child is called forward to receive a certificate. There was also a meal prepared for the participants and their family members.
Marie Allen whose grandson, Bennett Hawn, has participated each year said, “I think it’s just a really good program that they’ve worked hard to put together.” She added that her grandson has enjoyed the academy and looks forward to it each year.
