Polling places will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, for the primary runoff election in Webster County.
The only race on the Democratic ballot will be that for sheriff. Candidates David Gore and Casey Henderson led a three-man field in the Aug. 6 Democratic primary — Gore with about 38% of the vote and Henderson with about 35%.
Gore, who is of the Hohenlinden community, retired Dec. 31 from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks after 35 years as a conservation officer (game warden) in Webster County.
Henderson, of Walthall, has worked as a law enforcement officer in Webster County for 10 years. He currently serves with the Eupora Police Department and previously served with the Webster County Sheriff’s Department. Henderson is also the elected marshal of Walthall and the fire chief there.
The Democratic nominee will advance to face Republican nominee Jeffrey Mann and Independent Calvin “Brad” Robinson in the November general election.
Andy McCants is now serving as the appointed sheriff. Tim Mitchell resigned from the position in June after pleading guilty to four felony charges and is serving a 15-year prison sentence.
Republican Ballot
Three runoffs in open races will be on the Republican ballot, including that for governor. Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. will face Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves in that race.
State Treasurer Lynn Fitch and Ridgeland attorney Andy Taggart will be in a runoff for attorney general.
John Caldwell of Nesbit and Geoffrey Yoste of Oxford will meet in a runoff election for Northern District transportation commissioner.
Tax Assessor-
Collector Primary
Clarification: The Aug. 14 article "Gore, Henderson in sheriff's runoff" failed to include the results of the Webster County tax assessor-collector's race in the Aug. 6 Democratic primary. It was a reporter’s error.
Incumbent Barbara Gore, who is unopposed in the general election, won that primary election with a 57% majority. She was challenged by Bonnie Martin Fulgham.
Absentee Voting
The last day to vote an in-office absentee ballot in the runoff election will be this Saturday, Aug. 24, from 8 a.m.-noon at the Circuit Clerk's Office in the Webster County Courthouse in Walthall.
A person must vote in the same primary on Tuesday as they did on Aug. 6, or may vote in either if they did not vote at all then. One must have been registered to vote as of July 29 to cast a ballot in the runoffs.
TSX Testing
The Circuit Clerk’s Office and officials in charge of elections will run a test at the Webster County Courthouse beginning at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 21, to ascertain that the Accu Vote TSX units will count the votes cast for all offices and on all measures. Testing was to also be conducted Tuesday.
The test will be conducted by testing a number of the DRE units being used in the Aug. 27 primary runoffs. All memory cards to be used will be tested and the test will be conducted until all units have been tested.
Representatives of candidates, political parties, news media and the public are invited and shall be permitted to observe the test.
