On Saturday, May 4, United Way of North Central Mississippi will host the United We Read Big Book Giveaway, a program endorsing literacy for all ages to the neighboring four counties it serves.
This Saturday is designated Webster and Choctaw County Book Giveaway Day. Anyone who loves to read is welcome to come and select free books to enjoy and to share with others.
Partnering with UWNCM to coordinate the annual event are the Starkville Kiwanis and Read to Succeed. A variety of hundreds of books will be available in each of the four counties.
The organization’s motto is “Stronger neighbors make stronger communities”
In another exemplary act of community support, UWNCM aims to distribute more than 4,000 books to attendees, a goal that could not be accomplished without the support of many strong neighbors.
Throughout April, community members have donated books at donation sites throughout Choctaw, Oktibbeha, Webster and Winston counties. New or used books can still be dropped off through Friday at North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora, Piggly Wiggly or the Webster County Extension Office, according to Barry Rushing, chair in Webster County.
The Book Giveaway in Webster County will be at the old Garan parking lot community market on Highway 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Collected books are sure to entertain readers of all ages and include a variety of genres such as children’s picture books, young adults’ fiction, and the more advanced readers’ sci-fi, biography, mystery and suspense, and inspirational reading.
In addition to the Big Book Giveaway events, books will also be shared with local libraries, summer reading programs, senior citizen homes and centers, little libraries’ projects, apartment complex libraries and other venues.
