The Winston County Board of Supervisors recognized the closure of the bridge over Tallahaga Creek on Young Crossing Road during its December 16 meeting.
Jimmy Kemp, County Engineer, presented the state report of critical findings on the bridge with an immediate recommendation of closure. Kemp noted the bridge was already closed and no traffic going through.
Kemp pointed out in the report the photos of the deterioration of the bridge pilings. He added that with the closure the county could begin working on options for repairing or replacing the bridge and could seek state funds.
Supervisor Luke Parkes noted that getting funds from the legislature in a nonelection year was often tough. He compared it to raising a child: “The first year they are up in Jackson the county may get a pacifier (very little funds for roads) the next year a bottle (a little more), the next year the county might get some solid food (funds) to actually fix the roads and bridges.
In 2019, the county was awarded funds to repair three bridges, Russell Road, Highpoint-Weir Road and Zion Ridge Road with all 3 presently out for contract.
