At their monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 11, the Louisville Municipal School District Board of Trustees honored the ‘Parents of the Year.”
Parents recognized were: Tynneshia Armstrong, Fair Elementary; Erica Cole, Louisville Elementary; Kristi Jernigan, Eiland
Middle School; Alonzo Dorsey, Louisville High School and District Parent of the Year; Chasite McDaniel, Nanih Waiya Attendance Center; Becky Hamilton, Noxapater Attendance Center. In addition, Chet Wilkes, Noxapater Attendance Center Principal was honored as ‘Administrator of the Year,’ and Chawan Jernigan received an ‘Achievement in Reading’ certificate for Completion of Reading Plus.
The Board heard a presentation from Michelle Carter of the MS Departmetn of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, concerning the MS Scholastic Shooting Program which is a teambased, youth development program that uses the shotgun sports of 5-Stand, Skeet, and Sporting Clays to instill life skills such as discipline, safety, teamwork, ethics, selfconfidence, and other life values. The program utilizes these disciplines to teach hunting skills through the safe use of hunting equipment, including firearms, and their relationship to hunting situations.
Carter explained that there are grants available to begin a club and currently all grant applications are being awarded. The school board will notify Carter if they approve and apply.
Superintendent, Dr. Randy Grierson reported:
• Rotary of Louisville has donated an additional $2.8K to assist students with the Family’s First Graduation Program and Dual-Credit.
• Ten students will test for their Certified Nurse Assistant License in March.
• The District is up to over $21K this year in Dual-Credit sponsorships from community businesses and organizations.
• Work is in progress to establish a Licensed Practical Nurse program by August 2020 as part of the Career & Technical Program.
• Five students have begun their pre-apprenticeship at Taylor Machine Works.
• Seventeen district football players signed scholarships to play at the next level.
In other action, the Board:
• Voted 5-0 to approve the consent agenda which included the following donations:
• Citizen’s Bank, $3K for the School Stash Fund to Louisville High School.
• Terri Cistrunk, an HP Laptop valued at $320 purchased with EEF funds, to Eiland Middle School.
• Winston Wrecker Service, $300 for the Noxapater baseball program.
• Duran’s Tax Service, $50 for the Noxapater baseball program.
• Winston Plywood, $300 for the Noxapater baseball program.
• Woody’s, $200 for the Noxapater baseball program.
• Best Life Nutrition Studio, $50 for the Noxapater baseball program.
• C Trans, Inc, $150 for the Noxapater baseball program.
• Citizen’s Bank, $2.1K for the School Stash Fund for Nanih Waiya.
• Citizen’s Bank, $2.2K for the School Stash Fund for Noxapater.
• Voted 5-0 to approve Belinda Swart as Federal Programs Director/Assistant Superintendent for the 2020-2021 school year.
• Voted 5-0 to approve payment of half the cost of new band uniforms at Louisville High School, at a cost of $20K.
• Voted 4-1 to approve Amy Fulton tutoring, after hours, in her school room to be paid by parents. Board member Bobby Pierce voted against the measure.
• Voted 5-0 to set the date of the next School Board meeting on Tuesday, March 24, at 5:30 pm.
