On Saturday, March 23, the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Noxubee Refuge will be hosting its first Canoe Day for 2019.
Canoes and kayaks along with paddles and life jackets will be available for visitors to use starting at 10 AM.
As part of this special event, there will be an Open House during which time visitors can visit with the refuge’s staff, ask questions, and learn more about the refuge’s management. In addition, the refuge will be celebrating the First Place Wins from the recent iNaturalist Bioblitz Challenge.
The refuge won in two categories, Most Species with 540 species identified, and Most Unique Contributors with 51 people providing at least five research grade records.
As prizes for each of the 51 unique contributors, the National Wildlife Refuge System’s Inventory and Monitoring science program has provided a challenge coin as a gift. These challenge coins will be given to the 51 contributors at the event. Both events will occur at the refuge’s visitor center located on the south shore of Bluff Lake (13723 Bluff Lake Road, Brooksville, MS).
