Mississippians will go to the polls next week to cast ballots in party primaries.
Polling places will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, for statewide, state district, legislative, county and county district offices. Mississippi does not have open primaries and therefore one must vote in either the Democratic primary or the Republican primary.
These races in the first primary have at least three candidates each and could potentially result in runoffs, which will be Aug. 27 if necessary:
• Democratic primary: Governor, sheriff, supervisor District 1, supervisor District 3 and Justice Court judge District 1.
• Republican primary: Governor, attorney general and Northern District transportation commissioner.
Once the winners of the first and second primaries have been certified, the winners of each primary will be placed on the November general ballot along with Independent candidates and one may cross-vote between candidates at that time.
If you will not be in the area on primary day, you still have time to cast an absentee ballot. Saturday is the in-person absentee voting deadline. The Circuit Clerk’s Office at the new Webster County Courthouse in Walthall will be open from 8 a.m. until noon that day. Mailed-in absentee ballots must be received by 5 p.m. Monday.
Deputy Circuit Clerk Wanda Robinson said 100 absentee votes had been cast in Webster County as of Friday afternoon. Of that number, 69 were Democratic ballots and 31 were Republican. The county has 7,202 active voters.
Anyone who has questions about the primary election may call the Circuit Clerk’s Office at 258-6287.
