The Maben Home and Garden Club, which was established about 54 years ago, is still moving along trying to live up to its purpose: “to stimulate interest, knowledge and love of flowers, beautification of homes, gardens and community development.”
Over the years members have passed on, and some have dropped out, but the membership has filled those spots with people interested in civic improvement.
The aims of the club are to make gardens more beautiful, to increase knowledge of gardening, to beautify the town, and to share the memory of others by planting trees in their honor.
Throughout the years the club has sponsored the Yard of the Month selection and recognition to those who have demonstrated this by maintaining beautiful yards. If you see the sign, take a minute and congratulate those for keeping a beautiful yard.
To increase knowledge of gardening (floral landscaping) the club holds monthly meetings with speakers imparting information about plants, insects and birds to the membership.
To beautify the town of Maben, the club invests hundreds of dollars in landscape services for the upkeep of the four-way stop on MS Hwy. 15, the new plantings at the Maben Post Office and Joy Dodd’s, the Maben Public Library frontage, the “Welcome to Maben” sign, and more recently the plantings of six new boxes on Second Avenue.
Recently the HomeTown Boys Club of Maben generously supplied the funds for the construction of these six new flower boxes. The MHGC furnished the planting and the new plaques recognizing the HOMETOWN BOYS CLUB OF MABEN: Ken Norwood, Wallace Sansing, Jim Scrivener, Junior Johnson, Phillip Doss and Yvonne Wooten Doss, Margaret and Lee Shuffield.
The club over the years has planted numerous trees in memory of deceased club members plus placed plaques in recognition of their service.
The club has also placed books in area libraries in recognition of deceased members.
Another planting of spring-blooming trees along Water Street (from the post office to the library) is planned in the late fall.
If you are in appreciation of the these men and women, take a minute and say thank you.
