Charges have been filed against the Webster County man authorities say shot at law enforcement officers and into an occupied home two weeks ago.
William Glenn Campbell, 38, of Starnes Tabernacle Road is charged with five counts of aggravated assault on an officer and shooting into a dwelling house.
The charges stem from a May 15-16 incident on Starnes Tabernacle and North Sapa roads. Two deputies first attempted to make a warrantless arrest of Campbell at his residence on a misdemeanor charge of simple assault/domestic violence. Acting Sheriff Andy McCants said they had to retreat when Campbell began shooting at them.
Campbell then drove to North Sapa Road and began shooting into the trailer home of a family member with a shotgun, according to McCants. A 15-year-old girl inside was struck by projectiles in the head and arm, but was released from the hospital a few days later.
McCants said Campbell was armed with other weapons also and a large amount of ammunition. He shot into the vehicles of deputies who responded and fired toward officers from other law enforcement agencies who came to assist, McCants said. No officers were shot and none fired back out of caution for civilians there.
When Campbell began driving away a few hours later, officers set up a roadblock at a nearby intersection. McCants said Campbell kept driving toward law enforcement vehicles and was shot multiple times. The wounded man was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he remains hospitalized.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has since charged Campbell with five counts of aggravated assault on an officer and one count of shooting into a dwelling house, according to McCants. Justice Court Judge Jerry Jones signed warrants for his arrest on Thursday.
“We’re not going to serve the arrest warrants until we find out his condition,” McCants said Monday.
