During the meeting of the Louisville Board of Aldermen on January 21, agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics discussed a substance called kratom which is available in some convenience stores and has been a factor in some deaths.
Surrounding states and a number of counties and municipalities within the State have moved to ban kratom, and MBN agents urged the City of Louisville to do so, as well.
However, after discussing and considering the legalities of such an ordinance, during the Board meeting on Tuesday, February 4, Mayor Will Hill presented the Board with a resolution to the Mississippi Legislature urging the prohibition of “use, purchase, possession, distribution, sale or offering for sale of Kratom in the State of Mississippi.”
The Board unanimously approved the resolution which will be sent to the Legislature.
Mike Forster of the Louisville-Winston County Airport Authority reported that 2020 should be a big year for the airport with an expected total of almost $4.5M investment for renovations and construction on the runway and hangar. The Board unanimously approved payment to Ridge Point Consultants for $3.2K for survey costs and $46K to King’s Metal Buildings for hangar renovation.
In other action, the Board:
• Voted 5-0 to remove 77 Redd St. & 109 Warner Ave. from the unclean property list as they are now in compliance.
• Voted 5-0 to set a public hearing on the Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan for Tuesday, February 18 at 5:15 pm. at the City Hall.
• Voted 5-0 to authorize payment to PPM Consultants for $30.7K for professional services through December on the EPA Brownfield project.
• Voted 5-0 to authorize registration for the Mayor’s Youth Council to attend the MML Youth Summit in Hattiesburg on February 28-29.
• Voted 5-0 to authorize the Mayor to negotiate with Winston County concerning the taxes on the WCM building.
• Voted 5-0 to acknowledge Virginia McDonald as a DARE Officer who will be working at Noxapater Attendance Center and Nanih Waiya Attendance Center.
The Louisville Board of Aldermen meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm.
