Louisville’s mayor Will Hill recently signed a proclamation entitled “Litterless Louisville” in an effort to inspire a community-wide clean-up March 19 through April 16.
“One of the ways that we can help to alleviate the pervasive litter problem is with projects like this one,” said Mayor Hill.
Research shows that once an individual participates in a cleanup, it will be unlikely that they will litter in their future. Also, research suggets setting levels of expectations such as believing that no littering is the way it should be and encouraging the community to buy into the notion is something that is achievable.
Mayor Hill challenged the leaders to help set the standard that littering is not acceptable and to continue to offer positive messaging that helps to develop community pride.
The purpose of the initiative is to raise awareness about Louisville’s pervasive litter problem, its affects on the community and top gain a “Litterless Louisville”.
The proclamation read:
WHEREAS, the City of Louisville desires to lead, support, and inspire a community wide cleanup effort throughout the City of Louisville as we welcome Spring; and,
WHEREAS, the streets and walkways of Louisville have become victim of carelessness throughout the community, litter is EVERYWHERE, and it will take EVERYONE working together
to rid the ugly and bring back the beauty with Spring,' and,
WHEREAS, the citizens of Louisville can help by cleaning their own property, inspiring
neighbors to work together in picking up roadside litter in your own neighborhoods, volunteering, educating ALL CITIZENS on the negative impact of littering, eliminating loose trash from open truck beds, and planning community service cleanup days for
schools, civic clubs, volunteer groups, & churches.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of
the City of Louisville, Mississippi, proclaims March 19 through April 16, 2019, as a
LITTERLESS LOUISVILLE CAMPAIGN in Louisville, Mississippi; AND BE IT
FURTHER RESOLVED that the citizens of Louisville enthusiastically participate in the
cleanup efforts of the community.
Adopted this day, March 19,20 19, and approved by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the
City of Louisville, in regular session.
