An inmate who escaped from the Webster County Jail last week is now in a state prison after being captured. Two other inmates and a young woman are accused of helping him.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Department said escaped inmate Anthony Logan was taken into custody without incident or injury about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 23 after he was found hiding under a bed in the rear of a house on Hebron Road in Choctaw County.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections’ Northern Special Response Team, along with deputies from the Choctaw and Webster County sheriffs’ offices, apprehended Logan after investigating a lead that he may have been inside the house, the WCSD said in a release. MDOC transported 18-year-old Logan to the Oktibbeha County Jail that night and transferred him to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl on Thursday.
Acting Webster County Sheriff Andy McCants thanked all state and local agencies, especially the Eupora and Mathiston police departments, for their assistance in the safe capture of Logan.
Other arrests
In addition to Logan being charged with escape, three others were charged with helping him before and afterwards. Inmates Elton Neil Gordon, 27, and Jonathan Wayne “Jay Money” Sisco, 19, were charged with aiding escape of a felon. Destiny Marie Cooper, 19, was charged with concealing or harboring a prisoner. Logan was captured in Cooper’s house at 5597 Hebron Road, according to McCants, who said he believes she is in a relationship with Logan.
Logan escaped from jail the afternoon of Jan. 20 while he and other inmates were in the exercise yard. Gordon and Sisco are accused of assisting Logan onto the roof, according to affidavits filed in Webster County Justice Court. McCants previously said Logan jumped onto the roof in the entranceway between the jail and exercise yard after concertina wire atop the fenced-in yard was pulled away from the roof using a metal stanchion hanging down from the wire. Logan then ran across the roof and escaped out the back of the facility, McCants said.
Gordon, of McKnight Road, Ackerman, and Cooper appeared Friday before Justice Court Judge Jerry Jones. He set bond at $20,000 each, and appointed public defenders Stephanie Mallette to represent Gordon and Hays Burchfield to represent Cooper. Gordon and Cooper remained in the county jail as of Monday morning.
Gordon was originally jailed Dec. 4 on city charges of possession of meth, expired driver’s license and improper equipment. Jail records show he has also been charged with two counts of possession of contraband.
Circuit Court
Logan and Sisco were among three men co-indicted Dec. 11 by a Webster County grand jury. They were charged with burglary of a dwelling house in an Aug. 22 break-in at Eric and Minnita Marshall’s home on Hall Road.
Logan and Sisco, both of Eupora, pleaded guilty Jan. 10. Circuit Judge George Mitchell Jr. sentenced each to 15 years in MDOC custody, with 10 years to serve followed by five years’ parole supervision. Mitchell also ordered them to pay restitution of $500 to Eric Marshall.
As part of the plea agreements, the state agreed not to move forward with any other unindicted charges against them in the 5th Circuit Court District. After their arrests in August, all three co-defendants had also been charged in connection with another residential burglary on Crowell Road. Additionally, Sisco had been charged by the Sheriff’s Department with burglarizing two other houses on Lebanon Road and felony malicious mischief.
Logan and Sisco were awaiting transfer to a state facility when the escape occurred. Sisco was transferred to the CMCF on Jan. 22, according to MDOC records.
The third indictee was Lewis Henry “Pay Day” Thompson Jr., 26, of Lebanon Road. He was arrested Jan. 23 on a hold for MDOC after being out on bond since Aug. 31. Circuit Clerk Sherry Henderson said he was served with his indictment and arraignment is pending. Thompson remained in the county jail of Monday. He was indicted with a sentence enhancement for previous convictions in Neshoba County of house burglary and grand larceny.
