This past Friday Louisville Mayor Will Hill signed a proclamation declaring October 24-30 as Head Start Week in Louisville. The ceremony was held at the Head Start facility on Eiland Avenue and was attended by not only Head Start students and staff, but many family members and friends, as well.
In its 53rd year of service to the Winston County Community, there are 48 Early Head Start children (from 2 months to 3 years of age) enrolled and 188 Head Start children (3-4 years of age). Regional Administrator, Irene Smith stated that Early Head Start is funded for only 48 students. Smith added that they coordinate their instruction with the local school system to be sure that everyone is on the same page.
The ceremony on Friday included presentations by the students, as well as a guest speaker. At 9:30 a.m., on Wednesday, October 30, there will be a Red, White and Blue Parade at the Mississippi Action for Progress Complex on Eiland Ave. which will include the Louisville High School band and football team, including players and coaches.
Mayor Hill’s proclamation stated in part that Head Start is a comprehensive, family-oriented child development program for low-income families, and since its establishment on May 18, 1965, Head Start has provided comprehensive health, education, nutritional and social services to nearly one million preschool children and families, and major research findings document the program's lasting positive effects on children.
Smith added that the cooperation between Head Start and local institutions is vital because without the help of the community they cannot accomplish their goals.
