The Louisville Municipal School District of the direction of Superintendent Randy Grierson has implemented an internship program with local industries and the program is underway at Taylor Machine Works.
The program is aimed at high school students learning career skills to help them find and acquire high-wage employment in the community in the future.
Superintendent Randy Grierson’s and the School District’s goal is to connect students to the workforce and create an environment where students spend time in the classroom as well as work in industries settings to learn professional skills, then identify a possible future career.
“This was a monumental day for the Louisville Municipal School District, as our work over the past year has come together to meet the desired purpose, which is to provide our local industry with workers, and provide students the opportunity to begin a career level job while still in high school. Our mission throughout this process is to do what is best for kids and provide life changing opportunities for kids. Everything we do is designed to make a difference in the lives of children,” stated Grierson after the first day of internships began at Taylor Machine Works.
He added,”Our goal is to develop opportunities for our students… to begin their career while still in high school, and to provide workers for our local industry through our career and technical center. Our ambition is to provide a dependable workforce for any of our local industry leaders so that finding workers will never be a problem.”
In addition to learning work skills and classroom skills, the students also learn more about the local industries and overall part of the community.
Grierson noted, “In doing this, it's imperative that we build relationships with local industry so that our younger generations can have the opportunity to build a career prior to finishing their high school career. Our first cohort of 5 students begins Monday, January 27th, at Taylor Machine Works. Everyone at Taylor Machine Works has been amazing to work with over the past year. We cannot thank Lex and Robert Taylor for taking time to listen to our program goals, and provide an avenue to begin the process. Joe Cowart and Brian Tennant continue to go above and beyond spending countless hours of going through every hurdle to ensure we have a system in place that will benefit both parties. This is truly a blessing for our school district and students. This just the beginning of something that we will make great as we have more industry involved to where we can continue to create more and more opportunities for students.”
Grierson has plans to expand and build upon this initial pilot program.
