Authorities were continuing their search as of Monday for a Webster County Jail inmate who escaped over the weekend.
Anthony Logan, 18, escaped Sunday afternoon after jumping onto the roof above the gated entranceway between the jail and the exercise yard.
Acting Sheriff Andy McCants said he was one of 10 inmates who had been let out in the yard about 3:45 p.m. for an exercise period. All inmates were let out to spend 45 minutes to an hour in the exercise yard, he said, noting that Sunday was the first sunny day they’d had in a while to allow this.
McCants said Logan grabbed a Y-shaped metal stanchion above the entranceway that was supporting the concertina wire atop the fenced-in yard and used it to pull the wire away from the roof. He then climbed up on the roof, ran across it to the back and jumped to the ground, according to McCants. Logan was then able to flee because there’s no fencing around the compound except the exercise yard itself.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections and surrounding counties helped search for Logan that night, McCants said, but the inmate had not been apprehended as of Monday afternoon. He said the Sheriff’s Department was following leads and interviewing people, and that others will probably be charged.
Logan is a black male described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 258-7701.
Court sentence
Logan was awaiting transfer to an MDOC facility after being indicted in 2018 and later sentenced in Webster County Circuit Court.
Court records show he pleaded guilty Jan. 10 to burglary of a dwelling house. Circuit Judge George Mitchell Jr. sentenced him to 15 years in MDOC custody, with 10 years to serve followed by five years of post-release supervision. Mitchell also ordered that he pay restitution of $500 to victim Eric Marshall.
As part of the plea agreement, the state agreed not to move forward with any other unindicted charges in the 5th Circuit Court District, according to the judgment.
Marshall’s house on Hall Road was burglarized the morning of Aug. 22. Logan and two other men were arrested later that morning near Walthall and charged in the burglary. He was also charged with accessory after the fact in connection with another break-in that occurred the same day on Crowell Road.
Jail records show Logan was bound over to the action of the grand jury on Sept. 14 and released on bond that night. Sheriff’s deputies arrested him again Oct. 16, charging him with two counts of burglary and other misdemeanor offenses. Jail records indicate that Logan, after that arrest, remained incarcerated until his escape.
