A high speed chase involving Winston Sheriff’s Office personnel, on Monday afternoon, April 29, resulted in the arrest of two individuals who were in possession of a stolen 16-foot utility trailer.
Sheriff Jason Pugh stated that his department received a call Monday morning from a resident on Yellow Creek Rd., reporting the theft of the trailer. Early in the afternoon, a young man who works for the owner saw two individuals painting the trailer, behind a mobile home on Puckett Rd.
Pugh and Deputy Keith Alexander responded to the call and spotted the suspects traveling west on Hwy. 14, in a Ford Ranger truck, pulling the trailer behind. The truck turned onto Ellison Ridge Rd. and the chase very quickly went off road, through several pastures. Pugh stated that the driver even went through one resident’s yard, and came very close to where she was mowing the lawn.
Deputy Greg Lee joined the pursuit, and he and Alexander were able to box the truck in near Eaves Rd.
Taken into custody were John Thomas Carnes and Will Ford; Carnes, who is a registered sex offender from Alabama, currently resides on Enon Rd. Ford is the 18-year-old son of Carnes’ girlfriend. Pugh stated that he feels certain the arrests will help to solve several crimes here and in other counties.
Pugh commended deputies Alexander, Lee and Lester Holdiness who responded in his personal vehicle. Also, some members of East Winston Fire Dept. helped to alert residents of the situation.
Such incidents are extremely dangerous, and Pugh stated that he knew they could not allow Carnes to reach the highway for fear that someone would be killed.
