Summer is here and it is time to make sure kids eat healthy while school is out.
The Louisville Municipal School District has partnered with the USDA to provide freee meals to children during the summer.
It is summer tradition for the district to partner with USDA to feed children in need each summer.
The program has served ten of thousands of meals for the last few summers to local youth who are forced to find adequate food during the summer break.
The program is a way for children to receive two free meals a day, during the summer break. Most summers, around 1,000 kids benefit from the program.
This year’s summer program will begin June 3 and end at most schools Juloy 26. Meals are served between 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m
Meals will be served at:
Louisville High June 3rd through July 26th (closed July 1st to 5th )
Nanih Waiya June 3rd through July 26th (closed July 1st to 5th)
Noxapater June 3rd through June 28th
The programs serves nutritious meals in low-income areas (where 50 percent or more of the students qualify for no-cost or reduced price school meals) regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The program may operate in schools, public housing centers, camps, parks, faith-based facilities, and other sites where students gather during the summer months. Meals are served to eligible children at no cost and registration is not required.
This service is being done in an effort to help address the critical need of feeding children throughout the summer vacation.
Last year, nearly one million children received free or reduced meals during the school year at eligible districts trhoughout the state, but less than 15 percent received meals or snacks at approved summer meal sites in their neighborhoods. The free summer feeding program is just an additional way LMSD staff has worked to provide free meals to students. All students receive free meals during the school year, and during the school year, students are assisted through Backpack Buddies, a non-profit organization that sends meals home with qualifying children over the weekend.
