At around noon on Tuesday, June 4, personnel from Louisville Fire Department, Nanih Waiya Volunteer Fire Department, East Winston Volunteer Fire Department, and Mississippi Forestry Commission, along with Winston County Fire Coordinator Jody Garrard, responded to a chicken house fire on Garrigues Road, near the intersection of Boon Road.
LFD Deputy Chief Robert Hutto stated that the chicken house was fully involved (in fire) when they arrived on scene.
The house appeared to be a complete loss. This was a laying house owned by Bubba and Cully Hudspeth of Winston County.
Workers stated that they had been away and when they returned the house was on fire and 911 was contacted. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
According to other news reports an estimated 22,000 birds were lost.
