The Town & Country Garden Club along with Friends of Legion State Park observed and recognized Arbor Day on February 9 at Legion State Park.
The program began at 10 am at the entrance to the park. After the opening ceremony with former Senator Giles Ward giving a history and reason for Arbor Day, the members of the two clubs and the students from the Forestry program at Winston Louisville Career Technical Center planted 15 dogwood trees along the roadside of the park. These trees were acquired by Mr. Kline Shepherd.
Afterwards, several attendees enjoyed the beautiful landscape as well as the rustic Lodge. President of the Friends of Legion Park Mike Dowd presented the invocation and Tim Flake MDWFP manager of the Park thanked all for support of the park. The Winston County Board of Supervisors especially Burr Warner and city elected officials were recognized for their efforts in the park.Brad Rogers, Director of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks attended the event as well. There are 5 cabins, an RV park with 16 pads, one small and one large fishing lake, walking trails, picnic areas and our newly revised Patio Rock Pavilion with a bathroom.
Several projects are planned inside and outside the Lodge, which is on the “National Register of Historical Places”. The group is now working on plans for a museum. The “Kids-N-Kats” fishing rodeo is held annually. This year, it will be held on April 29. The Lodge is the meeting place for many events including the quarterly meetings of FLSP and the Summer Picnic and the Christmas Party in December. A Fall Musical Festival is being planned for November 10.
