Students celebrate Arbor Day at the Red Hills Mine
On Wednesday, April 3rd, the Choctaw County Soil & Water Conversation District and the Red Hills Mine held the annual Arbor Day celebration. One hundred thirteen 4th Grade students from Ackerman, French Camp and Weir schools participated in this celebration.
Students were welcomed to the Mine by Eli Frierson, the Environmental Specialist. Eli shared the importance of trees and why they are important to our environment. This was a great educational opportunity for the students. The students took part in planting trees and were provided soil, fertilizer and hay. Students were assisted by the Mine employees and volunteers.
After the planting was completed, students were taken on a tour of the Red Hills Mine. They learned about the mining process and equipment used to mine the coal.
At the end of the tour, each student was given a tree to take home and plant. It was a beautiful day for this celebration and enjoyed by all.
The NRCS employees would like to thank Mr. Eli Frierson, the Mine employees and volunteers that made this day so special.
