Commercial chicken farming requires a high level of expertise, understanding and commitment. Brenda Myers Goodin and her husband Clarence understand the full measure of this.
They are operating the third generation farm, Bruner Myers Farm, that they purchased from Brenda’s parents. It is still a family venture with Brenda’s mother, Marie Myers and the Goodin’s daughter, Hillary, helping out on the farm when and where they can.
Brenda grew up on the farm and likes the family aspect of it, "I like to be here. I love the family component."
They presently operate two chicken houses with around 10,000 chickens and 1000 roosters. While also raising cattle with about 85 cattle on the farm.
"Commitment is the key to a successful farm," said Brenda. "These animals depend on us to care for them."
"You must have your heart in this business, because it takes a lot of hard work," added Clarence.
Brenda described the 7 day a week from early morning to late evening work schedule of the farm knowing that the efforts are necessary to meet the egg contracts and pay the bills of the farms.
Farming is 24/7/365, and Brenda admits can be a tough life. But it’s one they relish.
Mornings start at around 4:30 a.m.
