Nanih Waiya took just five competitors to the MHSAA Region 3-1A powerlifting meet back on Feb. 10., but all five of them brought home individual championships.
Daniel Triplett, Braxton Stokes, Blake Sheets, Cole Misso and Caleb Warren won individual region titles and helped the Warriors to a second-place team finish in the event.
Host Ethel, which had entries in all 11 weight classes, won first place.
“We are real proud of all five of those guys and think all of them have a chance to move all the way through to state,” Nanih Waiya coach Ryan Keeton said.
Next up for the Warriors will be a return trip to Ethel for the MHSAA Class 1A South State Meet, scheduled for March 10.
Triplett was first in the 181-pound weight class, while Stokes won the 198-pound weight division. Sheets was first in the 220-pound weight class; Misso was first in the 308-pound weight class; and Warren won first place in the super heavyweight 308-plus weight division.
The state powerlifting meet will be held in April at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
Last year, the Warriors finished third in the team standings in the state meet. Triplett, Stokes and Warren all finished as the state runners-up individually, while Misso also had a top-five finish.
