100 Years Ago – February 14, 1918
LOUISVILLE: Howard Giffin arrived home this week, having received his final discharge. - Howard Triplett arrived home from Boston a few days ago, having been discharged. - Isador Gordon made a flying visit to Memphis where he saw his 8-pound girl who made her arrival last Friday. - About the biggest sign we notice along a farming line so far is that quite a number of horses and mules are being sold here. - Mr. and Mrs. Grover P. Reed left last week for Ackerman where they will make their future home. Mr. Reed has been with the Central Miss. Telephone Company and L. L. & Power Co. for a number of years, where he made a very efficient and well-liked employee.
DEATHS: On January 14, 1919, the angel of death came into the home of Dr. Aaron Barnes and took dear Hazel away. She leaves a husband, one little darling boy Willard, a mother, one brother, and five sisters.
MARRIAGES: On February 5th, at the residence of the bride’s mother, Mrs. Mary F. Estes, Mr. Carroll Cooper of Deemer and Miss Myrtle Estes were united in marriage, Rev. J. F. Sansing officiating [Noxapater].
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Wilkins are rejoiced over the arrival of a fine girl on the 28th. - Mrs. C. M. Woods had the pleasure this week of a visit from her brother, Mr. Jim Marriot and family of Browns, Ill. - Mrs. J. T. Holloway had a visit from the “Stork” on the 7th, and left in possession of a fine girl. Mrs. Holloway’s husband is serving with the U. S. Forces in France and hopes to be home soon.
75 Years Ago – February 11, 1943
DEATHS: John Phillip Metts, 89, died Feb. 2nd in Ruleville, after a long illness. Funeral services were held in the home of his sister, Mrs. E. E. Jacoway, in Greenwood, with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Having moved to Greenwood in 1888, he spent most of his adult life there. He was born and reared in Winston county, being the oldest son of the late Capt. and Mrs. Metts, a prominent family in that county. - Funeral services were held Jan. 31st in Noxapater for Mrs. Harriett Atkinson, 75, who died on the 29th of January. - Mr. Augustus Bowie Goodin, 79, died Feb. 1st at his home in the southeast part of the county. His health had been as usual and he had been in Louisville earlier that day. He died of heart failure. Funeral services were held from Pleasant Springs in Kemper county Feb. 3rd. - Mrs. Elsa Hull Ball died Feb. 3rd in Honduras, Central America, with burial there. She is survived by her husband, Augustus Fairchild Ball, and one daughter, Mrs. Bob Fowler, as well as her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. V. Hull of Louisville, four brothers and two sisters.
LOUISVILLE: Many of our men in service have been home visiting or on furlough, including Pfc. Joseph W. Moody, Pvt. Carvil Roebuck, Sgt. James L. Eubanks, Pharmacist Mate A. Q. Anderson, Pvt. William Wilson, CPO Walter Fuller Baker, Petty Officer 3/c Herris Crowson, Pvt. Cyrus G. Ray, Pvt. John S. Fair, Pvt. Hoy Hathorn, and Sgt. Sue Hopkins, WAC. - Mrs. W. A. Strong, Jr. arrived home Monday after an extended with her husband, who is with Ships Company of the Seabees in Camp Peary, Va.
NOXAPATER: The Bandage Room is open at 1 o’clock each Wednesday and Friday. We need you and our boys need these bandages. So please, come and help. - Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Garrigues, Mrs. Wayne Fulton, Mrs. Robert Clark and son Joe, Mrs. Sue Kirk and daughter Ann were guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Jones Wednesday, that being the anniversary of Mr. Jones’ birthday. - Mr. H. J. VanLandingham is this week opening an up-to-date Shoe Repair Shop. He is located in the Woods’ store building.
