100 Years Ago – March 7, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Attorney H. H. Rodgers spent several days in Memphis last week where he was engaged in court, having been retained in the $100,000 case of the Coleman boys who were drowned in the Mississippi river while working on a boat there last year, and their people are suing the corporation for their deaths. - Noble Ellis, who has been in the Navy for quite a while, received his final discharge this week and is now at home. - Nim Smith, son of Mrs. Beulah Smith, arrived home a few days ago from France. His brother is still overseas.
DEATHS: Mrs. L. N. Kinard died at her home in northeastern portion of our county last week. Mrs. Kinard was an estimable lady, and her death was a shock to her husband and many friends. - The friends of Mr. John Tomlinson, an old resident of Winston county, will be sorry to learn of his recent death. – Mrs. Beckie Jenkins, one of our county’s oldest citizens, died at her home east of town a few days ago. - Mrs. Johns, an aged lady north of town, who has been in feeble health for some time, died a few days ago. She was a good woman and leaves a number of children.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. Lillie Hardwick is now saleslady at Wren Coleman’s where she will be glad to serve her friends. - Mrs. DeCell and son Kenneth, after a visit here with the former’s daughter, Mrs. Thos. G. Hopkin, left last week for their home, Raymond. - Mr. Morris of Hickman, Ky., is here on a visit to his father, Mr. H. C. Morris.
One of the most delightful affairs of the season was a dinner part given by Mr. and Mrs. Slider at their home on Monday evening. The rooms thrown open for the occasion were decorated in a wreath of spring blossoms and ferns. A color scheme of yellow and white was carried out. Covers for 22 were laid on beautifully appointed tables. Music was enjoyed until a late hour. Mr. Rundle expressed very best wishes to the host and hostess and congratulations to the host on his 50th birthday.
75 Years Ago – March 3, 1944
DEATHS: Funeral services were held for Mrs. Mary Clearman, 58, at the Bevil Hill Methodist Church February 29th, with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Mary Johnnie Clearman was born Jan. 6, 1886 in the Bevil Hill community and lived there all her life. She died February 28, and leaves behind her husband George Clearman and two daughters, as well as two sisters. - Funeral services were held for Mr. Jim B. Sullivan, 84, at Good Hope church February 29th. A native of Winston County, he passed away at his home at High Point on the 27th. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and three daughters.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. James Turner are the proud parents of a fine baby daughter, Sarah Catherine, born February 21st at the Philadelphia hospital. - Sgt. and Mrs. T. F. Stevens announce the birth of a son, Thomas Franklin, Jr., February 29th. - Pfc. and Mrs. Daw Richardson announce the arrival of a son, Daw Alexander, Jr. February 24th. - Mr. and Mrs. James Mills are the proud parents of a baby girl, born March 2nd and named Earline June.
LOUISVILLE: Pfc. David Hull arrived from North Carolina for a visit with relatives before going on to Gulfport where he will be stationed. - Mac Doolittle is still confined to his bed after a heart attack on Feb. 22nd, and he is improving. - Mr. F. P Kennett, who suffered a heart attack last week, is confined to bed and continuing to improve. - Wilson Taylor of the SeeBees is home on furlough. He has been stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Woodruff of Rocky Hill visited their mother, Mrs. N.W. Webb, Saturday. - Mrs. Annie Dunn was called to Louisville by the illness of her daughter, Mrs. Ellis. - Mr. and Mrs. Jim Triplett have moved here from Kreole, where they resided for several months.
