100 Years Ago – February 28, 1919
Winston County farmers have shipped to St. Louis market since Jan. 1st, 1919 the neat sum of $20,000 worth of hogs, according to a front-page article.
LOUISVILLE: Ruben Prisock arrived home a few days ago having received his final discharge from the army. - Mrs. Beckie Jenkins, one of the oldest women in our county, had the misfortune to fall one day recently and received serious injuries. - Everett Hyde just received his final discharge and has returned from Camp Pike. - We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Tom Triplett of Triplett-town on the arrival of a fine boy and girl, Thomas Lamar and Annie Laura, last week. - Walter Triplett received his final discharge and returned home Wednesday.
BETHEDEN: Miss Sallie Peaster and Mr. George Spence were married last Sunday, at the home of the bride. - Charlie Morgan, who has been in the service for the past 4 years, gave his friends here quite a surprise by sending the announcement of his marriage to Miss Lyda Burgman of Chicago. Charley has been in Honolulu since entering the service. - Oney Edwards has received his final discharge from the army and returned home, having been in training at Camp in New York.
NOXAPATER: Mr. Jesse Palmer and family, who have resided near town the past year, left last week for Kemper, where they will make their home. - Mr. and Mrs. Roger Kilpatrick are the proud parents of a fine boy, who made his advent on the 22nd. - Messrs. F. M. Glenn and H. B. Duck attended the meeting of the Grand Lodge in Meridian this week. - Mr. Peggy Reed had the misfortune of getting painfully burned last Wednesday, by fire popping out and igniting his clothing. He was carried to Newton Hospital where his friends hope he may soon recover.
75 Years Ago – February 25, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chapman of Louisville are in the U. S. Service, two in the Army and two in the Navy. - Serving in the U. S. Armed Forces are five sons of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Covington of Louisville. Three sons are in the Army, one in the Navy and one in the Air Corps.
DEATHS: Mr. W. L. Lukens passed away at his home in Union early Thursday morning of a heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Lukens are former residents of Louisville, having moved to Union in the thirties. He was employed by the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad. - Rev. Sidney Eugene McAdory, 64, was born in Winston County Sept. 21, 1879, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. McAdory. In 1896, at the age of 17, he was licensed to preach and was ordained the following year. He was married to Miss Zoda Berlin Moore in July 26, 1903 and to this union were born six daughters and four sons. He became a member of the Masonic Order in 1921, and served as Worshipful Master for the Henry Clay Lodge for one year. In December 1925 he was appointed as missionary to the Choctaw Indians, where he served faithfully until his death. He died February 16th at his home in Union after a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife, nine of their ten children, and grandchildren. Funeral services and burial were held at the First Baptist Church in Union.
LOUISVILLE: S/Sgt. H. G. Powers, currently at camp in San Antonio, is home visiting his wife and infant daughter, born February 16th at Louisville Hospital. - Mr. and Mrs. Thad Barrier of Laurel came up Sunday for a visit with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Walker. Mrs. Barrier remained for several days. - Last Sunday, Percy Frazier and son Percy Mac visited their father and grandfather, Mr. Dutch Frazier, who has been ill at his home in Crawford.
WEDDINGS: Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Hughes of Kosciusko announce the marriage of their daughter, Mrs. Dena Dorsey to Mr. Raymond C. Peoples of Kentucky, with the marriage taking place in Columbus in late February. Mrs. Dorsey was formerly employed by Gordon’s Department Store. - Mrs. Annie Vinson of Panama City, Fla. announces the marriage of her granddaughter, Bonita Kitchen, to Sgt. Joe Cockrell of Tyndall Field, Fla. and Louisville, Miss. The ceremony took place at the home of Rev. W. L. Day, February 19th.
NOXAPATER: Miss Frances Morgan of the Philadelphia city school faculty spent the week end visiting her mother, Mrs. Hattie Morgan. - Mrs. Annie Dunn has returned home after visiting her daughter, Mrs. Edna Earl Allen and family. - Mrs. W. E. Wall spent Sunday in Meridian, guest of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Sid Curtis.
