Another soldier’s letter was published on the front page, this time from Hayes P. Irving 114 Supply Train, Co. E. 30th Division, A. E. F. France, to his mother, Mrs. F. A. Alford of Weir, dated Jan. 19, 1919. He writes that he is well and doing fine, although he has a little cold. It rains every day and has snowed once this month. He had just returned from Verdun, where he and a boy from Denver, Colo. drove there in a Dodge for some automobile parts, taking them from salvage cars and trucks. He continued, saying he was not sure when they will get back home, commenting that he rather be in Germany than there. He went on to say that the French soldiers are doing nothing but loafing, and expecting the Americans to rebuild France.
