Current reigning Miss Missouri 2018, Katelyn Lewis, came as an ambassador, of the Show me State, to Weir Elementary School (WES). WES is home of former 1980 Miss America Cheryl Prewitt . Miss Missouri’s mother, Lisa Lewis and her Aunt Linda Reed are former Alumni graduates of Weir High School. Miss Missouri came to visit and read “Take a Chance” to the first and second grade classes. Mrs. Martin, who is the reading teacher for first and second grade, set up the visit - and the kids were very excited to see (as they said) a Real live ‘Princess’. Miss Missouri shared a small video of her crowning.
After her small video introduction, Lewis told the students to never give up on their dreams! She used her real-life experience of winning the crown as an example. Lewis told the students that she did not win the crown for Miss Missouri her first time (it was actually her fourth try that got her the crown). Each time she participated in the Miss Missouri pageant, she took what she learned from the previous contest and built on her experience. Miss Missouri shared her platform, “Your Digital Compass”, with the students. Her platform is designed to help students leave a positive, healthy footprint online.
She has a passion to help young people navigate safely on the web. So she has developed a website that will help both young people and their parents to learn how to ‘surf’ the web safely. Here is the link to her website https://www.yourdigitalcompass.net
WES would like to thank Ms. Martin for setting up the visit and also thank Miss Missouri for taking the time to make a difference - it is a visit they will remember. Students keep Chasing Your Dreams!
