Mid-morning Wednesday, local election commissioners released official results of the Ward 3 Alderman special election. Four candidates vied for the coveted seat, including Steven Hampton, Charles Mays, Wanda Marshall-Smith, and Stacy Thames.
When the official count was over, commissioners and city officials saw that a run-off was necessary. Steven Hampton won 69 votes out of a total of 220 votes cast in-person on March 5, while Charles Mays won 70 out of 220. After affidavit ballots were counted, the candidates were tied at 75 votes each.
Wanda Marshall-Smith won 52 votes, while Stacy Thames won twenty-nine out of 220. Eleven affidavit ballots were cast, giving a total of 231 individuals voting in the Ward 3 special election.
Both Hampton and Mays won 32 percent of the vote, which created a need for the run-off. Marshall-Smith won 23 percent of the vote, with Thames winning 13 percent.
The run-off will be held on Tuesday, March 26, at the Louisville Coliseum. Only individuals in Ward 3 are eligible to vote in this special election.
