Mary Jane Gibson reflects, “My daughter, granddaughter and I were traveling along I-40 on our long trek of almost 2,000 miles from Eupora, Mississippi, to Las Vegas, Nevada.
“We were taking Sara Grace to the mission field the Lord had shown her and where she would spend the summer serving him. The landscape through Oklahoma and now Texas was beautiful but somewhat the same mile after mile. Sleepily I watched out the window to catch a glimpse of an animal or another interesting thing.
“All of a sudden at the exit for Groom, Texas, out in the middle of what seemed nowhere, there appeared the ‘The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ on the opposite side of the interstate. I could hardly believe my eyes. There it was — the 19-story 2.5 million-pound steel Hallelujah.
“Immediately I thought of the project Christians in our tiny part of the world were working toward, ‘The Cross of Christ,’ for our area. In the 2010 census the town of Groom in Carson County, Texas, had a population of 574. Within the immediate 30-mile radius where Christians have been praying and giving for our cross, the populous is much larger.
“One day as cars whiz by and think there is nothing in this part of rural Mississippi, travelers on U.S. Highway 82 and MS Highway 9 will be humbled as they view our ‘Cross of Christ,’ our steel Hallelujah, and remember what our Savior Jesus Christ did on the Cross and will know that Christ is honored and adored here.”
