The Choctaw County Supervisors held a short meeting Monday morning but before their meeting began, they wanted to clear a rumor that had been swirling around on Facebook.
“There’s a rumor going around on Facebook that a sawmill wanted to come to the county, and we ran it off, that’s just untrue,” Chancery Clerk Steve Montgomery said. Montgomery said there was talks with a pellet company who was considering coming to Choctaw County, but didn’t feel the rail system would be adequate enough to carry their loads. Montgomery said the company thought it was “too small.”
So, Choctaw fell out of the running for the company. But Supervisors wants the county to know they did not “run off” a company, and if anything, they would welcome the company.
In other news, the board discussed structural damage on the outside of the courthouse grounds.
Montgomery said he asked Marty Crowder about the hole, but Crowder told him that was an expertise that wasn’t particularly his. Supervisor Chris McIntire said he believes the issue is happening because the water is flowing toward the building instead of away, causing the damage.
Supervisor Rodney Bowman said he feels the board should hire someone with the expertise to tell them what to do.
McIntire and Supervisor Greg Fondren suggested getting Ben Chambers to take a look at the issue.
“Ben has one of those cameras that can go down and take a look at it,” McIntire said.
“If we’re going to do that, you should also look at the drainage system,” Montgomery said. “If you’re going to fix it. Fix it right.”
The board also approved the hire of Robert Medders for District 2, effective Monday, September 9.
The board then entered executive session for an economic development matter.
