With 73% of the vote, incumbent Lamar Dumas won Eupora’s Democratic mayoral primary last week and will advance to the general election.
He defeated challenger Kayla Cherrelle Oats in the Democratic primary on April 6, receiving 170 votes to Oats’ 52.
Dumas, who is seeking a second term as mayor of Eupora, will face Republican candidate Blake McMullan in the June 8 general election.
The primary vote total included 15 absentee ballots, according to City Clerk Gail Newton. She said six affidavit ballots were cast — all by county residents and therefore not counted. No voter ID affidavit ballots were cast. The turnout represented 15% of the city’s registered voters.
All candidates for aldermen in Eupora were unopposed in the primary election and all except one will be unopposed in the general election. Aldermen-at-large Jerry Gary, running as a Republican, will face Democratic candidate Sherman Butler on June 8. The new term begins July 1.
