Kosciusko Police Chief Herbert Dew told the Star-Herald MArch 20 that the two suspects in a shooting near North Natchez Street and Woodard Lane March 19 had been taken into custody in Choctaw County.
The arrests were made around 12:45 p.m. March 20 by the U.S. Marshall's Task Force and the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department. The pair were then transported to the Kosciusko Police Department for processing.
The pair are charged with aggravated assault and additional charges are pending. No bond has been set at this time, so following processing, they were transported to be held at the Leake County correctional facility.
Dew said earlier that police had initially responded to a call regarding an assault at Kosciusko Check Delay on the square March 19 afternoon. The female victim, who had reportedly told police she had been assaulted by two suspects, told police she would go to the station to file a complaint.
As police arrived back at the station, a 911 call came in reporting a shooting at North Natchez Street and Woodard Lane. When police arrived, they discovered that the same victim, a 34-year-old female, had been shot in the upper left arm. She was transported to Jackson by Medstat Ambulance Service and was later released.
The two suspects were 31-year-old Antonio L. Winters, a black male from Kosciusko, and a 22-year-old black female, Styvekka Thompson, of Ethel. Both suspects are wanted for aggravated assault. The suspects seen headed north on N. Natchez Street in a white Chevrolet Tahoe-type vehicle following the shooting.
According to Dew, the altercations were the result of a dispute over the custody of a child Winters had previously been raising with the victim. The victim, along with the child’s biological mother, had sought physical custody of the child since Winters was reportedly expected to be incarcerated.
The victim and the child’s mother had asked for police help to locate the child after Winters was arrested and held by Holmes County law enforcement last week.
Winters was also due to appear during this month’s session of Circuit Court to answer to 2017 charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a felon and several drug charges, including possession of methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.
