WALTHALL — Webster County is applying for federal funding to buy two new vehicles for the Sheriff's Department.
The Board of Supervisors authorized the Golden Triangle Planning and Development District on Jan. 19 to prepare and submit a USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Grant/Loan application for the county to purchase two new vehicles for the Sheriff’s Department, meeting minutes show.
As part of that motion, the board also passed a resolution stating the same, authorized the president and clerk to sign on behalf of the county, and set a public hearing regarding the project. The hearing will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Courthouse during the board's next meeting.
The Community Facilities Loan and Grant Program provides affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas.
Public bodies can use the funds for public safety services such as the purchase of police vehicles. Low-interest direct loans, grants or a combination of the two are available. Funding is provided through a competitive process.
Also on Jan. 19, the board voted to spread a copy of Commissioner Dan Burchfield’s monthly Golden Triangle Regional Solid Waste Management Authority report on the minutes.

• adopt the General Services Administration rates to be paid for reimbursement of privately owned vehicle usage, which is 50.56 cents as of Jan. 1.
• apply for the annual Emergency Management Performance Grant Program for this fiscal year and authorize the signing of the application by the president and emergency management agency director.

On Feb. 1, the board voted to allow Justice Clerk Lisa Dean to purchase a new copy machine for the Justice Court office, which is within her budget.
The board opened bids to sell a railcar used as a pipe/culvert in District 2 and two flatcars used as a bridge in District 4. The board voted to Jan. 19 to advertise the items by posting.
Supervisors accepted high bids of $8,300 from Stan Rodgers for the District 2 railcar and $10,000 from Double S for both District 4 flatcars, and rejected the low bids.
EMA Director Barry Rushing and Deputy EMA Director Tom Booth discussed the need to contract for the scheduled maintenance of fire trucks. County Engineer Karl Grubb discussed bridge projects with supervisors.
The Courthouse will be closed Monday for Washington’s Birthday.
