WRITEON FOR JULY 12
sister alies.
If you are a sports fan of almost any stripe...this was a great week or two. From the signing of NBA players, to WWCup, to Wimbledon to NASCAR...even to cornholes...baseball all-stars and the home run kings... golf, powerboat racing, USA softball Int. Cup, motorcycle racing, boxing, mens' soccer cup, NHRA/drag racing, and even the Tour de France, and there must be a track meet somewhere!...oh my, I'm exhausted sitting on my couch and clicking my clicker!
One doesn't have to be a pro at rules and regs to see that each of these sports is winning. A bronze medal is almost nothing...and anything less, well...why did you come? How sad.
Have to say, having played a variety of sports that that isn't the only possible attitude. Winning, of course, is wonderful. Equally playing/participating is also wonderful. I mean to make the USA National Team (in any sport) for example...brilliant...even if one loses. To be in the majors or on the local all-star team is fabulous...even if...
When we teach each other that winning is all there is we miss something very beautiful...we miss the reality of the beauty of each athlete...of their practice, and hurts; of their joys and sorrows; of their wonderful and horrid seasons. I used to think, when I played, that respecting my teammates meant throwing them a pass or giving an assist...that that was very important to the formation of the team. I was also taught about respecting the other team. I don't mean giving them the game...but I learned to hold in highest regard the athletes we wanted to beat. Then when we won (or even if we lost) we knew that we had played in such a fashion that all could honor the moment, win or lose. Sooooo, enjoy those big games still to come and remind the kids that yes, winning is important, but becoming a fine athlete is also very important.
Ok WINNING IS ALSO WONDERFUL. WWCUP USA 2/Netherlands 0!// MENs GOLD CUP…Mexico 1 USA 0. WOMENS VOLLEYBALL INTL. USA=Gold medal. Congrats to all.
Whew...hot...
BLESSINGS.
