WRITEON FOR JUNE 26
sister alies.
If you really want to have fun…then travel with the GIRLFRIENDS2019. Last Tuesday 10 went to the new TWO MUSEUMS down in Jackson. Our friends at Enon and John Barksdale our driver made the ride possible. We are very grateful!
Juneteenth (that’s June 19) is the solemn remembrance of the day the slaves were set free. The exhibition of SPIRITS OF THE PASSAGE, began our exploration, followed by lunch and then into the CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM. The day ended with a frosty and for several, a nap back!
The story of the transatlantic slave trade (over 6million people traded)runs until August 11. Well worth a visit.
“ A sea of stolen lives. A ship that never landed. A voice, unsilenced. Explore rare, firsthand accounts of loss and resilience from the unlikely discovery of a sunken slave ship…By the millions, they were taken from their homes in the largest forced migration in human history—and enslaved. Now we hear them speak through rare artifacts recovered from the wreckage of a sunken slave ship. From one of history’s most devastating chapters rise tales of strength, resistance, and fortitude.”(Leaflet).
If you have never touched into this part of history, nor thought much about what happened to these 6million people…this exhibition, followed by the Civil Rights Museum, will offer you a clear window into constructed tragedy and an almost phoenix-like rising of a beautiful people. Even today in our world of politics the discussion continues about reparations.
The Civil Rights Museum is a treasure for Mississippi as well as all our neighbors. Many of our readers will remember those times having lived them from the skin out, both black and white. Equally, many things happened in the shadows, under the guise of a darkness that filled peoples’ hearts. Many of these find their way here and can help educate us all against hatred and bigotry at any level, at any time.
BLESSINGS.
