WRITEON FOR JANUARY 29, 2020
sister alies.
If you want to meet someone who loves their job and wants to share it with others then go to “Miss T.” on the corner of Hwys.12 & 15, and get to know Teresia. The other day I went to chat with her and I felt so lifted up when I left…just from her personable manner and laugh!
Some of you no doubt have visited her ‘thrift store’ ~ ‘junk store’~ ‘stuff store’ many times in the last year. She came in Dec. 2018 and opened in the new year. I fondly remember THE MUG where she is now doing business. Teresia has another store run by her daughter in Alabama. (We’ll forgive her for that! She was raised here and went to AHS.)
Teresia works mostly on her own and can make a living, listening carefully to what folks want and then watches for it. Some of the things in the shop come from folks selling to her, others items from purchasing a storage unit, for example. Turnover is important in her business as in any…why would I go back if it was always the ‘same’? “I only buy what I think I can sell.”
“I’m a people person. I love to talk to people! I haven’t advertised except for a one-off on FB. No orders on-line! It’s the best job I’ve ever had. In a small town folks know one another soooo…word of mouth is best!”
“There is always a risk in opening a business and it takes a while to get going. But you have to be there…show up…they’ll come back!” If it’s a dreary day, she goes in. If it’s a sunny day, she goes in. “I’m also a ‘convenience shop’ for those needing a light bulb or a switch. Young folks come looking for old books or something for a ‘collection they have. Am still considering the Chamber.”
“I think there are only three downsides: a bad parking lot, weather so I can’t put stuff out, and space! I’m in process of having a little artificial flower shop soon. I try to be ready for wheel chairs and walkers…”
Like others, I asked her what the town needed to bring folks in. Here are some of her suggestions: “coffee shop, dollar tree, skating rink, waffle house, movie theatre and things the whole town does together, like a ‘big yard sale’.”
“I try to help the community by giving away clothes at the end of the season to folks needing them. Gave out several jackets last week. I let folks sell their own stuff outside. Have 25cents trailers, and you can bring me stuff to sell. I love it here and plan to stay. Come and see me! You’ll get good friendly service.”
“MISS T.” OPEN Tues-Sat 8AM-4
I enjoy shopping there, never know what or who you might run into!
BLESSINGS.
