In observance of Finer Womanhood Month, Rho Nu Zeta Chapter hosted an Afternoon Tea at the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club with several organizations in attendance. The theme was “Refresh Yourself with a Cup of Tea among Finer Women.”
Participants from the chapter included Malinda Winters serving as Toast Mistress and provided the mediation and closing prayer, Charlotte Miller (chapter president) extended greetings, and Virginia Thomas acknowledged the guests.
The occasion was given by Ilona Saffold. She stated, “Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread, butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her for tea. Today we come together as friends, Sorority sisters, Sister Greeks and Community leading ladies to celebrate one another and partake in afternoon tea. After almost two years of not being able to meet, we celebrate today as a whole body, in person, with bonding and closeness as a goal. Finer Womanhood is defined as, “distinguishing characteristics of a woman, one superior in kind, quality, or appearance; marked by or affecting elegance or refinement.” A Finer Woman is someone who epitomizes the true ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is seen by all as a leader and sets the example of a true woman of excellence. The Finer Womanhood celebration is a Sorority hallmark which began in 1923. Unique to our sorority, Finer Womanhood celebrations around the globe emphasize the standards, morals, customs, and attributes of fine young ladies, community, and Sorority members. It is celebrated the last week of February through the entire month of March.” She encouraged everyone to take the time often to refresh your mind, body, and spirit with a cup of tea among Finer Women.”
