In one of the most anticipated races in the Tuesday, November 8, general election, the contest for 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives pitted Michael Guest (R), the incumbent, against Shuwaski A. Young (D). In Winston County, Guest received 3,267 votes to Young's 2,043 votes. Beyond Winston County, Guest carried the entire 3rd Congressional District and was reelected to his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. In another anticipated race, 5th District Circuit Court Judge, Place 2, five candidates competed for the position: Doug S. Crosby, Doug Evans, Alan D. “Devo” Lancaster, Zachary A. Madison, and Kasey Burney Young. Young led the final tally in Winston County with 1,956 votes, followed by Madison with 1,301 votes. Next were Lancaster with 1,033 votes, Evans with 583, and Crosby with 324. However, across the entire 5th District, which along with Winston includes the counties of Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, and Webster, the top vote getters were Lancaster and Evans. The two will vie for the post in a Tuesday, November 29 runoff election with polls again open in Winston County from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other races on the general election ballot in Winston County were non-contested: •District 3, Position 2, Court of Appeals Judge: John H. Emfinger, 4,525 votes received. •Chancery Court Judge, District 6, Place 1: Joseph Kilgore, 4,626 votes received. •Chancery Court Judge, District 6, Place 2: Kiley Kirk, 4,765 votes received. •Circuit Court Judge, District 5, Place 1: Joseph H. “Joey” Loper, Jr., 4,618 votes received. According to data, 43.75% of eligible voters in Winston County cast ballots in the general election.
