Winston’s 4-H Kayak club paddles up river from Burt’s landing on the Nanih Waiya Wildlife Management Area (WMA) this past Saturday. The club was hosted by Mr. Brad Joiner with MDWFP forestry. He showed the 4-Hers species of trees and vines commonly found in bottom lands and aquatic areas throughout central Mississippi.
The group also learned about venomous species of snakes found in Mississippi from Jim McAdory, Winston’s County Agent. After a short paddle, the group got to witness up close one of the non-venomous water snakes catch and begin to eat a catfish. A great bonus of learning outdoors is getting the chance to see and experience what the instructors teach either in the class room or group meetings.
The group also learned about where the origin of Pearl River begins, and how it flows throughout our state. As always, the club motto is ‘leave it better than you find it,” and we got an opportunity to practice good stewardship by picking up litter from the river itself and around the boat launch area.
It was a great morning of learning, camaraderie, and fun for everyone. The 4-H Slogan is “Learn by Doing” and that’s what this club is doing, while making some lifetime friendships and memories.
A special thanks to Mr. Brad Joiner with MDWFP for spending time teaching our 4-Hers forestry, and just being a positive example of a good and productive Mississippian our club can look up to. Thanks Brad!
Plans are at this time to kayak Grenada Lake next month, so don’t miss out.
