Winston 4-H’s new Knots, Tools, and Skills (KTS) club kicked off their first meeting last week hosted by the Louisville City Fire Department. Fire Chief Robert Hutto had planned a great night of learning all about fire safety in the home, how to put out an actual grease fire, tools firemen use right off the truck, and how to tie a figure eight knot.
At least that was the plan. As luck would have it, or bad luck that is, Chief Hutto had to leave on an important call. Chief left us in capable hands though. Mr. James Mask was on hand to fill in and did a great job with our club showing them how to tie the figure eight knot and demonstrated many of the tools located on a modern-day fire truck.
The turn out from youth all around Winston County far exceeded any expectations we had initially about this new club concept. The KTS Club is designed to teach young people paratactical skills that will help them for a lifetime. Not only will these young people get to learn from experts, but they will also get to do actual hands-on learning at all future club meetings.
Our group had a great night, even if Fire Chief Hutto didn’t get to stay and teach them everything he had planned. We are very thankful for his, and the Louisville Fire Department service to our community. We fully understand when duty calls for them, that comes first.
Our next meeting will be at the Louisville City Airport. We’ll learn some fun aspects of how the airport is operated, and about some knots, tools and skills that keep aircraft flying all around the world, right here from Louisville.
If you’d like for your child to participate in the new KTS club and know more detailed information about our November meeting and future meetings, call the Winston Extension office at 662-773-3091.
Come join Winston 4-H, and we’ll see to it that your young person will “Learn by Doing.”
