Wings over Winston thrilled large crowd October 9.
The event kicked off Saturday with stellar performances as planes soared through the air in a high-flying event.
The professional aerobatic pilots who performed during the two-hour air show treated onlookers to an assortment of death-defying rolls, loops and spins just hundreds of feet above the ground.
“It was a great day full of excitement filled with good food from local places and entertainment for everyone,” said Anna Katherine Woods who ahd her 1 year old daughter Riley Ann at the event.
The breathtaking aerial choreography thrilled tens of thousands of spectators who lined the airport hangar area. Spectacularly blue skies provided perfect flying conditions for the show. While the performers were soaring overhead, the spectators were soaking up the action.
The air show was revived this year after being canceled in 2020 while the COVID-19 pandemic raged.
It is a centerpiece of Winston County’s attractions.
During some of the performances, the pilots spoke by radio with air show announcer giving a firsthand account of the death defying acrobatics.
Vintage Era Vocalist Theresa Eaman regaled the crowd with tunes from the 1940’s and 1950’s as well as the National Anthem.
Pilot and performer Greg Koontz successfully landed his aircraft on top of a moving pickup truck as part of “Alabama Boys” airshow act. Pilot Stephen Covington and his modified Pitts S2S, The Raptor, sped through the skies in several death defying rolls and moves. The AeroShell Acrobatic Team flew in four-plane formation flying form while performing within feet of one another. Nathan Hammond flew with his souped up Superchipmunk to thrill the crowd.
The event also had Greg Bryant and Bill Prout jump from a perfectly good airplane to skydive down to the runway.
