The Town & Country Garden club began their new year with a luncheon, September 16, 2021, at the lovely home of Patricia and David Holton. Patricia and Diane Luke served as hostesses. Members enjoyed a delicious potluck meal and the conversation was non-stop after not meeting during the summer months.
President, Diane Dempsey called the meeting to order. “New Creatures in Christ”, was the subject of Elaine Thompson’s inspiration. The parallel between God’s creations and how He works in our own lives was such an encouragement. Elaine ended the inspiration by quoting Psalms 118:24, “This is the day which the Lord hath made let us rejoice and be glad in it.” She alluded that she begins every day with this verse and challenged members to do the same.
Roll call and minutes were given by Debbie Moody. Dale Shumker presented the treasure report. Patricia Holton displayed a beautiful floral design that consisted of zinnias, purpurea, and miniature fern. The container that she chose was a white lantern type piece that was just perfect for a late summer patio supper. The horticulture specimen was given by Diane Dempsey. She chose a bush from her own garden, euonymus americanus . Euonymus americanus is a species of flowering plant in the family Celastraceae. Common names include strawberry bush, American strawberry, or bursting-heart. It is native to the eastern United States. This bush can be planted in drought or wet soils. It should be planted in a naturalized area as an undergrowth planting. Birds like the berries that come after the bloom. Be careful when planting because it could be invasive.
After a brief time of business, Diane Dempsey presented the program in which she went through the Handbook and gave members a glimpse of the year ahead of us. She explained that we would be doing some of the programs and projects that we were unable to have last year because of Covid restrictions. New projects and events were discussed. Diane shared that we were planning to have a busy year with a variety of programs that she felt would be enjoyable and benefit our club.
President Dempsey ended the meeting by announcing some dates to remember. They were as follows: MSU Landscape Design Symposium on October 20, 2021 and the Southern Pines District Meeting which will be hosted by our club on May 24, 2022. Our next club meeting will be October 21, 2021 and will be a tour of Van Hull’s gardens.
The meeting was adjourned by Diane. After the meeting members enjoyed touring Patricia’s back yard which was absolutely breath taking.
