Mrs. Becky Rosamond, a biologist, from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department came to visit French Camp Elementary kindergarten to talk about insects.
Insects provide useful services to mankind and the environment in a number of ways. They keep pest insects in check, pollinate crops humans rely on as food, and act as sanitation experts, cleaning up waste so that the world doesn't become overrun with waste.
Various insects and animals pollinate 100 different crops, including cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes and soybeans. Some crops, like blueberries, are 90 percent dependent on honeybee pollination. In the U.S., insect-pollinated crops were valued at over $29 billion according to Mississippi State University.
