Realizing that students need the opportunity to gather community service hours for scholarships and the like, the Winston/Louisville Career Tech Center chartered a local Key Club. The organization is based on “leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness.” It is being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.
The president of the local chapter of the Kiwanis Club, Glendia Cooper, was on hand to speak to the members of the club as well as participate in the installation of officers. The inaugural group of officers include: Chelsea Curtis (president), Ivy Greer (vice-president), NyJeh Austin (secretary), and Chawan Jernigan (treasurer).
Special guests of the installation included the director of the Winston-Louisville Career Tech Center, Mr. Shane McDaniel. Mr. James Jordan of the local Kiwanis Club was also in attendance.
The Key Club is under the direction of Mrs. Kristi Jernigan (Kiwanis advisor) and Ms. LaCheryl Love, faculty advisor.
The Key Club has already been active in the community, participating in Operation Christmas Child (a yearly project in which local churches and organizations fill boxes with items for children in foreign countries) and by making Valentine’s Day cards for residents of the nursing home.
The club will also participate in Read Across America at Fair Elementary, Clean-up Days at Louisville High School, the Spring Showcase fundraiser, and Little Libraries across the community.
“Key Club is an international, student-led organization that provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.”
