The country will celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday of the month as a federal holiday, and the Winston County NAACP is hosting a parade on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 10:30 AM.
The parade is a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King, who once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” King was known for his work to garner civil rights during the turbulent 1950s and 1960s across America, but particularly in the Deep South.
King himself led multiple peaceful protests and ultimately gave his life working to promote equal rights for all.
Ms. Dean Miller, the president of the local chapter of the NAACP, invites the entire community out to join in the parade. There is no entry fee for the event; however, the chapter asks that all entries are decorated. Participants are asked to be lined up and ready at 9:30 AM in front of the Coliseum. The parade will depart at 10:30 AM and later return to the Coliseum.
Invitations are made publicly to all churches, car clubs, civic groups, social clubs, ATV/Sling shot enthusiasts, horse clubs, hunting clubs as well as bikers and business owners to participate.
Members of the community are also encouraged to line the streets of the parade route, which is slated to begin on Ivy Avenue, turn on to Ball Drive. The parade will also make its way down Main Street and Columbus Avenue.
