Bywy Volunteer Fire Department had a busy beginning to 2022, responding to two house fires within the first three days of the year.
Both fires were on Hebron Road, and unfortunately both were total losses, but according to Bywy Volunteer Fire Department Chief, John Ballard, no one was injured in either fire.
The first call came in at around 8 p.m. on New Years Day, to the residence of Samantha Cooper. The second fire was reported at around 13:30 p.m. on January 3, at Edna Medders' residence.
Chief Ballard stated that in addition to Bywy VFD, Mathiston VFD, Reform VFD and Eupora FD responded to both scenes. He added that the departments in Choctaw County have seen very good mutual aid response.
The State Fire Marshal's office was contacted to determine the cause of the fires.
Webster Fires:
Eupora home destroyed in fire
From Staff Reports
Local fire departments responded to a house fire at 351 Waterworks Road around 3:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6.
Eupora Fire Chief Reagan Gary said Amanda Cork woke up to the sound of a smoke detector going off and got out safely with her two children. Eupora, Walthall and Mathiston fire departments responded.
The house was fully involved upon arrival and was a total loss, but firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to a neighboring residence and vehicles. Webster County Fire Coordinator Barry Rushing said the responding fire departments did an outstanding job and thanked them.
The fire originated in the living room/kitchen area but the cause is undetermined, according to Gary. Eupora firefighters were dispatched back to the scene about 11:50 a.m. Thursday after the fire rekindled.
Electrical Fire
About 12:30 p.m. Thursday while still at the latter call, Eupora FD was dispatched to an electrical fire at Kountry Kitchen, 2801 E. Roane Ave. An electric meter on the exterior wall between the restaurant and Kountry Smokes had caught fire, which a restaurant employee put out with a fire extinguisher. Kountry Kitchen has announced that it will be closed until Jan. 14 because of the resulting electrical problems.
EFD also provided mutual aid to the Bywy Fire Department at two house fires on Hebron Road in Choctaw County on Jan. 1 and 3.
Gary urges people to check their smoke detectors on a regular basis.
