At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Town of Noxapater Board of Aldermen, Mayor Sammy Carter shared with the aldermen damage that the town’s water system had sustained during the ice storm in mid-January. Carter shared that, on average, the daily amount of water used is about 170 gallons. However, due to burst pipes or lines in the system due to the subfreezing temps in January, consumption averaged about 387 gallons per day.
Carter shared utility and other pertinent bills, such as those for water purifying chemicals, that were higher for the month of January because of the water leaks.
Carter also revealed to the board that the town had received grant money to be used to make repairs to the water tower. He noted that bids must be submitted by April and the contract should be awarded by July.
The board approved a resolution to use the grant money for such repairs.
Carter also talked with the board about how the ice storm had caused exponentially higher water bills for town residents affected by said pipe leaks or breakage. He noted that the town intends to work with individuals affected as many of them are on a fixed income.
In other business, the town brought forward the interest of a potential business owner in Noxapater in a parcel of land that is owned by the town. They consulted the town attorney, who said that he would check into the procedure for either sale or rent to the individual and report back to the board.
Carter also informed the board that the town had been awarded a rural development grant to be put toward the purchase of a new Town of Noxapater truck. Carter had previously procured quotes prior to applying for the grant, but the price of the preferred truck had increased since Carter originally priced them. The board voted to approve the use of the grant money toward the truck as well as utilizing town funds to go toward the increased cost.
The Town of Noxapater Board of Aldermen meets the first Tuesday of the month unless otherwise noted.
