At the monthly Board of Aldermen hearing held on Tuesday, Noxapater’s elected officials heard a number of requests.
First, Megan Spence approached the board with a question as to getting water to her mobile home. Alderman Brian Burrage recognized the young lady and explained her situation. The young woman was advised to provide her phone number to the clerk, who would have city workers come to assess the property, then the city could provide her with deposit amounts.
Next, a situation in which a citizen wanted to pay a utility bill with a credit card but could not as the city is not equipped, the board went into a discussion with the city attorney about whether they should look into getting a point of sale machine that could accept cards. Alderman Tommy Bartholomew contributed that the city could likely contact MS Municipalities with the request to procure one of these machines at little or no cost. The top concern, however, was that most banks charge a percentage fee when individuals use a debit card to pay for goods or services. Alderman Brian Burrage recommended looking into getting a machine and Mayor Sammy Carter agreed.
Next, Carter told the board that he had talked with the Rural Water organization and he expects a report to be coming in soon. He added that he had talked with Stanley Spraglin regarding painting the water tower. Carter explained that Spraglin is in the process of talking with multiple companies and getting bids to have the structure repainted. The deadline to do so is next spring, but Carter anticipates the painting to take place later this year. Carter added there had been no recent water leaks until Tuesday, and city workers had replaced a one inch pipe in a wooded area.
Alderman Chris Wells brought up that he had been approached by a part-time officer with the Louisville Police Department. The individual offered to work part-time for the town of Noxapater in the same capacity. The mayor and board took this into consideration, stating that many citizens would like to see a larger police presence in Noxapater.
Wells also mentioned that the Noxapater Chamber Alliance would like to plant trees opposite those of the Kemp Associates building. This was approved by the board.
Aldermen Burrage brought forth issues at an apartment complex on HWY 390 going east of Noxapater. The town attorney provided recommendations, including that he could send a letter to the property owner regarding the incidents at the location.
Alderwoman Jamie Yarbrough brought to the board’s attention a citizen’s desire to purchase a plot of land owned by the town. After some discussion and input by the town attorney, Yarbrough was advised to tell the individual that they could either open the land to bidding or the individual could have two appraisals done, pay the higher appraisal, and purchase the land from there.
The board then adjourned for the month. The Noxapater Board of Aldermen meet monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at city hall.
